Today, the home cares for 64 children within our home, coming from many different districts of Uganda.

Our goal is to educate them, trace their families, and help get these children and others be in safe and loving families.

Note: We're currently transitioning our model to support family-based care. Us transitioning our model will reduce the dependency on institutionalization so that we can help and impact more children from within their families.

Founded during the Civil War of Northern Uganda

Redeemer Children's Home was founded in 1991 by the sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Sister Adriana Dwoki as the home director.

The sisters established the home to care for the many children impacted by the horrifying, 21-year war that had left many refugee children from Southern Sudan and Uganda traumatized, orphaned, and impoverished.

The home and its projects are still managed by the sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with sister Pasqua Binen Anena as the home director.

Our Story

Sister Adriana Dwoki and the sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, started Redeemer Children's Home in 1991 to help those children impacted by the Civil War of Northern Uganda.

Shortly after the home's establishment, we had 86 children (30 boys and 56 girls) in our care that received essential needs, love, and support. However, providing a safe and loving home for the children wasn't without challenges.

On June 17th, 2003, the LRA interfered with our Adjumani district Children's Home. As a result, Redeemer children and our staff quickly transferred to a new building founded by the UK-based organization the International Refugee Trust (IRT) in the Moyo district.

After moving to a safe building, our sisters were thankfully able to continue providing children with feeding, basic care needs, education, clothing, and medical care.

The Problem

In the early 1990s, civil war took over Northern Uganda led by The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), and subjected many children to abuse, torture, violence, and HIV/AIDs.

Many refugee parents were killed, and their children were either abducted by the LRA to serve as child soldiers or left roaming in their camps searching for food, shelter, and security.

The Solution

Even though peace negotiations in 2006 ended the 21-year war, the project is still very alive and well. Redeemer Children's Home supports orphans, vulnerable, refugee, and isolated children to be in families because every child deserves a family.

In the past 31 years, over 700 children have passed through Redeemer Children's Home. Many keep jobs in society and have become healthy and happy adults. We continue to impact the community through reuniting children and families while providing community education and sensitization on the importance of families and keeping families together.

To help orphans and vulnerable children for future self-reliance by ensuring access to education and helping kids be in loving families.

Mission

To safeguard the lives of children and restore their dignity so that they may have an abundant life, especially for orphans, vulnerable, and isolated children. We also want to prevent family separation by sustaining and empowering families economically and giving skills to better care for their children.

The Solution:

Reuniting children with biological parents when possible
Placing children with next of kin
Recruiting and preparing foster parents

Studies show that children thrive in families. Our dream is to be able to impact and transform the lives of more children by serving them from their homes and families rather than having them live at the home.
